What is a Blog Tag ?

A tag in a blog is like a label that allows somebody to search blogs for that label and therfore find a blog with that label in it. You can have tags in your blogs or attached to your blog.

You definately want to have both types of tag on your blog!

For the tags which are attched to your blog wordpress has a the power to do this without modification however there is a plugin called simple tags which is much better as it allows you to catagorize content based on a tagging engine. Each time that you make a post your tags appear at the bottom of your post. You can choose from tags suggested by Yahoo or Tag the Net. Just write your post and click on the suggested Tags from Button and a list of suggested tags will appear. Then just click on any of the suggestions to add them to your post.

Tags throughout your post. Again there is a great plugin called Tagalize It which allows you to enter tags in your post for Technorati and for Ice Rocket (these are both like blog search engines which work on Tags) All you have to do is put the tags either side of the word or phrase in wordpress and the plugin does the rest for you.

For example the picture below and the text below that are the same - the first is how you will see it in wordpress and the second is how everybody else will see it once your post is published.

Ilove makeing money online the web2.0 way! - Its so easy!

I love [tag-tec]making money online[/tag-tec] the [tag-tec]web2.0[/tag-tec] way! - Its so easy!

Notice how you do not see the tags in the published version. The example used has Technorati Tags to use Ice Rocket Tags just replace the "tec" with "ice" - Its that easy.

Obviously you will want your tags to be relevent to your Blog otherwise you may get lots of people clicking through but not staying for long!

I think your first two paragraphs sum up tags perfectly! It's like going into a supermarket you don't know and looking for a can of beans - you know the beans are in there, but where? You check out the signs hanging above the aisles to see which aisle your beans are on, say "tinned goods"; you go to that aisle, then you check out the labelling on the shelving "canned vegetables"; then you check the labels on the tins until you find your beans! How can people find your blog on the net without you labelling it right? There are lots of products out there to help you - you name two already - but do check out TagPiG from BlogPig, it's very simple to use and extremely accurate - saves loads of time if you have several blogs or posts to tag.
